| The pursuit of The Good Life |
Limoux Lectures Café Le Commerce, 11, Place de la République, Limoux
Limoux Lectures offers a series of informal themed talks on the pursuit of The Good Life, focussing on ways to enjoy better physical, mental and emotional well-being. ********************************************************* Meet in the café and then make your way upstairs………
Programme of Topics A Wabi Sabi Way of Living 10.30-12.00 Tuesday 20th July (5 Euros payable on the day) A Wabi Sabi way of life means treading lightly on our planet, in harmony with the natural world, appreciating whatever we encounter, finding beauty in surprising places. It challenges our preoccupation with material success and instead focuses on enjoying an unencumbered life, stripping things down to the bare essentials, allowing ourselves time to notice and attend to the tiny details of our everyday lives. It transcends conventional ways of looking and thinking about things, exchanging stressful high-energy attitudes to life with quiet grace. The roots of Wabi Sabi derive from the intricate rituals of the ancient Japanese tea ceremony. ************************************************************ Follow Your Heart 10.30 –12.00 Tuesday 10th August (5 Euros payable on the day) The heart’s creativity and intuitive wisdom are a unique inner resource, which we can draw upon for sound guidance. Explore what it means to live a heart-directed life, to feel in tune with your True Self and thereby live a life that is authentically in keeping with who you truly are. Identify how the rational head sometimes overrules the intuitive heart, to the detriment of our mental, emotional and physical well-being. Find and connect with the wisdom that lies in our hearts and see what it has to teach us about being true to ourselves. ************************************************************ The Power of Now 10.30 – 12.00 Tuesday 7th September (5 Euros payable on the day) This moment Now is the only place of first-hand experience. From second to second, it is the place where we make our decisions. Devoting our energy to the distractions of the Past and the Future, over which we have little or no control, provokes anxiety and stress. The Past is done; the Future never arrives. All we have is Now. This talk focuses on harnessing our energies to become fully present and engaged in each moment of our Here & Now experiencing. We explore how adopting this orientation of the mind can positively affect the way we feel and how we respond to situations that arise in our everyday living. *************************************************** Presented by Chrissie Horton, BA, MSc, MBACP Accred. an experienced, counsellor and psychotherapist in private practice. Before moving to France with her husband, artist Chat Robinson, she worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist for the NHS and in private practice. She has an MSc in Counselling Psychology and has taught on post-graduate counselling courses at Keele University. She developed and presented a series of workshops on personal and professional growth for counsellors, therapists and professionals within related fields. Before re-training as a therapist, she and her husband ran a successful communications consultancy, with a design and publishing arm, serving corporate clients in the public and private sectors of the UK, Europe and the US.

| Canet d'Aude - "The Friendly Village." |
Canet d'Aude mairie
Then; Val loves the village in which she lives, especially the friendliness of the people there and the amazing number of events and fêtes. There is always something going on in this lively village. |
| Grotte de Niaux |
We are really fortunate in this area in that we have some prehistoric art which we can visit and see in its original location unlike other caves where prehistoric paintings and engravings have been found but which are now closed to the public.
The cave of Niaux is truly exceptional and well worth a visit. It is a good idea to have visited the Parc de la Préhhistoire first so that you can get an idea about what you will see in Niaux. The paintings in the cave date from the Magdalenian era between 11,500 and 10,500 years ago. Local guides have been taking people to this cave since the 17th century but it was in 1906 that these paintings were brought to general attention by Commandant Molard when he drew up a plan of the cave.
You must book in advance to visit the cave because the number of people in each party is limited to 20 and only a few visits run each day. To make a reservation phone 05 61 05 10 10. During the summer months in particular some visits are conducted in English.
There is no electric lighting in the cave and visitors are provided with laterns, usually one between two people. You do need to watch where you are going as the path underfoot is far from smooth, can be wet and slippery and quite often the rocky roof above is low. You need to wear good walking shoes and take a jumper with you because the temperature is fresh - 12 degrees centigrade. The visit takes about 1 1/2 hours and you walk some 700 metres into the cave before you reach the Salon Noir where most of the paintings are to be found. Researchers believe that these caves were not actually ever inhabited and one can only guess at the purpose of the paintings there but there is no doubt about the skill of the artists, especially considering the materials and available light which they had.

| Lagrasse Abbey |
| Saint Martin des Puits. |
Saint Martin des Puits.
So many times people zoom through the village of St. Martin des Puits and never see the chapel!
Take the road south from Lagrasse in the Corbières, then turn right to St-Pierre-des-Champs on the D212. St. Martin is the next village, about 6km further along. But slow down as you reach the village; the road bends to the right, and the chapel is beside it on the right. But the road is considerably higher (in itself evidence the chapel is very old) and looks from the road like just another roof. Look for the little triangular bell-tower; if you can see it behind a tree! You can park just past it and walk back.
I visited the chapel, now always called a church, on a Sunday afternoon, and it was open. There wasn't a soul about and no notice on the door; it might be a good idea to check with the Mairie for opening times before you go, tel 04 68 43 11 66. Usually a local resident might have the key to open up for you.
History tells us this church was once a Carolingian monastery – well it must have been a tiny one! - that was ceded to Lagrasse in 1093. The trouble is that historians can only quote according to their earliest written records, and I believe St. Martin des Puits to be much older than that – Visigothic, in fact. But when Charles Martel ravaged the region of 737AD all the Visigothic records were destroyed.
To clarify, the French word for Roman is spelt Romain. Roman or Romanesque in French means in the classic early medieval style – plain walls and simple rounded arches. The later “Gothic” style did not mean Visigothic, but more heavily decorated with pointed arches, as you can see in the many great cathedrals of France.
Behind the altar are beautiful frescos – these are 12th century, as you can confirm by the picture of a knight on horseback. There is a preservation order on them as on the whole church. One can see why, the inside is truly beautiful with its own ambience.

| Durfort - copperware |
Durfort in the Montagne Noire (not the one in the Corbieres) has some lovely copperware shops. |
| CHATEAU PUIVERT |
Let’s start with some history and technical facts. Chateau Puivert is found on a rock at 600m altitude. The date it was built I haven’t found, but it’s medieval in character and the most intact remaining castle of the Cathars, apart from La Cite at Carcassonne. All sources refer to a three-day siege in 1210 when the castle was taken over by lieutenant Simon de Montfort. There are six towers incorporated into the castle walls, and has a keep of 35 meters high.

| Parc de la Préhistoire – Tarascon |
Parc de la Préhistoire – Tarascon What a fascinating place this is. It is set in a truly magnificent location too. On entering the park you are encouraged to realise just how far back in time the art work at Niaux was painted in the caves as you walk a long time line on the entrance footpath. There are a number of artificial lakes and waterfalls which are great fun for the children. Then the visitor can pass down the “torrent des traces” which includes a siphon and footprints of both humans and animals. After walking down a small slope you come upon an area where you can practise hurling a spear with a throwing stick. You then see a panorama which explains a typical prehistoric hunt. After that you approach a musical maze. Visitors can have a go at wall painting, watch demonstrations of flint dressing and fire making and walk into hide tents. There is also an area where archaeological digging is explained. But for me the most important part of the parc is the atelier – a museum where you pick up a set of headphones at the entrance and these enable you to hear, in the language of your choice, recorded information at each section. This gives visitors excellent background information on prehistoric art and sculpture. Personally I would recommend visiting this park first if you are planning to go to the cave at Niaux (do remember you need to book to go down the cave as the number of visitors is limited – phone 05 61 05 10 10 to book for the cave) I would say that the parc is suitable for young children e.g. 7+ but the cave I would suggest 10+. I'd be grateful to hear views of parents on this. |

| Abbey of Saint Hilaire |
It was founded in the 8th century during the reign of Charlemagne. Tradition has it that the monks here discovered the first "Champagne" in 1531. In the romanesque church there is a sarcophargus which is worth seeing and which is attibuted to the "Maître de Capestany", which is in fact a group of sculptors who were working in the North of Spain and the South of France in the 12 century. You can also see the abbot's lounge, the monks' old refectory and the cellar. To get to the Abbey From Carcassonne, take the D104 direction St Hilaire by Cavanac. From Limoux:
